Eps. 19

the king asks jumong where he heard that gosan nation has salt mountain, and jumong replies he heard it from his mom who said back in the days habaek village ppl would go to gosan nation for salt.the king is satisfied and compliments jumong and soseono for their well doing. the king then tells general to cancel the mission to okjeo, and orders his subject to give out the salt to the needy citizens at once.king geumwa then announces there will a feast in celebration and everyone must attend.meanwhile at yeontabal's, sayong and gyepil deliver the goodnews of their success to yeontabal.wootae says soseono indeed scored a good deed for stopping the war with okjeo. yeontabal states it's true but what she did has caused a war between daeso and jumong since their competition is stronger now.yeon-chae-ryeong (yeontabal's sister) arrives with salt from yeontabal's warehouse and gyepil appears surprised by her presence.

back in the palace the queen is angry at jumong's success, and her maid reports the rumor around the palace is that jumong is the one who has won the competition among the princes for the crown prince title.the queen's brother says it's true that what jumong accomplished is the greatest, but the queen states she will not have jumong be crowned. youngpo vows to hep daeso be crowned but the queen replies youngpo should look after himself first. daeso tells the queen it has merely just started. daeso goes out to the courtyard and watches as jumong and soseono walk by smiling and glazing at each other. soseono tells jumong she will return to her home but jumong convinces her to go see his mom with him first. soseono wants to come back when she's better dressed but jumong insists she goes in now.yoohwa tells jumong how happy she's that he's come back safely and jumong says it was all because of soseono, but soseono says she's the one who should thank yoohwa and jumong for leading her to the salt mountain. jumong goes on about how soseono saved him by putting her life at risk, and how soseono is the one who saved him during his trip to shijo mountain. soseono replies jumong has saved her in the past too, and yoohwa smiles. soseono says she should leave since she has yet to visit her father since she returned and afterwards, yoohwa tells jumong his fate with soseono seems very special since she saved him twice, yoohwa then asks jumong if he still has the ring she gave him, and jumong replies yes.yoohwa then asks if he wants to give that out now and jumong says not yet, and yoohwa nods telling him he should make the decision seriously.

youngpo takes his anger out on dochi by slashing part of dochi's hair off. youngpo leaves and dochi then takes his anger out on his inferior by beating him with a stool and kicking him. meanwhile, soseono returns to her home, and gyepil and sayong go on about how brave soseono was. wootae says soseono was immature instead of brave, and she was merely lucky, and she should not do the same again because that kind of luck only comes around once. yeontabal advises soseono to be cautious in the future and everyone leaves, except sayong who stays behind. next, sayong tells yeontabal soseono seems to have given her heart to prince jumong.gyepil hands out reward money to the workers at yeontabal's and gyepil gives hyepbo 2 shares of money, saying sayong wants to give his to hyeopbo. ohyi and mari laugh, while hyepbo isn't sure what to think of it.afterwards ohyi visits buyoung and she asks ohyi how jumong is doing. ohyi replies he's fine so she needn't worry. ohyi then says since jumong is back he'll surely help her leave dochi's place this time. ohyi then hands his reward money to buyoung and tells her to keep it. ohyi returns to yeontabal's and remains in a bad mood. when mari and hyeopbo urge him to get ready for the feast at buyeo palace, and ohyi says he won't go.

yeonchaeryeong helps soseono get ready and soseono tells her aunt about how she used to always calculate before making a transaction but during the last trip all she wanted was to save jumong even though she said she was doing business, soseono reveals how this was the first time she felt this way in her heart. jumong visits mopalmo and musong who congratulate him and jumong says the real competition has just began and they have to focus on finding the secret formula to perfecting strong swords.yeomieul talks with the young schuldo fairy soryeong and yeomieul asks soryeong if the bad omen she felt when she entered buyeo had to do with jumong and soryeong says she's not sure.just then the other sachuldo fairies come and asks yeomieul to prepare for the feast attendance, but yeomieul states she will not attend. the fairy yuseong is worried about the severed relationship between yeomieul and the king, but the other fairy tells her how the queen intends to make mawuryeo the next palace fairy. mawuryeo comments the business of setting head fairy is a matter of the heaven's so everyone should watch what they say.

the celeration feast begins in buyeo palace, with drummers and dancers opening the ceremony while the guests and the royal family dine an wine. daeso watches in jealousy as jumong and soseono toast to each other and seemingly having a goodtime. when the music stops, the king calls jumong, soseono, and yeontabal to come out in front. they follow his order and the king pours wine in 3 cups for them, then says they have erased the pain of the king and the citizens and he will not forget their contribution.the king tells them to drink up and yeontabal praises the king's sovereignty. the king then says he will grant a wish to prince jumong for what he has accomplished. budeukbul jumps in and says even tough jumong's contribution is grand, but.. and he is interrupted by the king who says not to worry since he's not about to crown anyone yet. jumong states the king's reward should be awarded to soseono, for she is the one who believed in him and went all the way to gosan in search of salt. soseono replies she is happy that her family could bring this joy to buyeo, and her wish is that her merchant family can be like today with the imperial family always. the king grants her wish and promises the buyeo royal family will always be in good terms with soseono's.jumong and daeso are both happy at soseono's reply. afterwards naro comes to soseono and tells her prince daeso wishes to see her for a moment. next, naro escorts soseono to daeso, and daeso thanks soseono for what she has done for buyeo. soseono says she was merely a lucky merchant. daeso replies he is more happy that he could see her again alive then the fact that she did such a great deed for buyeo, for he was worried sick when he heard she was captured by the haein thuglord.. soseono apologizes for making him worry, and daeso walks closer to her and tells her he will surely be crowned prince and afterwards he will make her his queen. soseono studies daeso in surprise..just then jumong walks by and sees soseono with daeso, and jumong appears jealoused.

daeso tells his mom he will go to hyeonto city to see yangjeong, since yangjeong had promised him previously that he would help him be crowned prince, and since yangjeong must have been hurt greatly by the king's decision, it is time for daeso to mend the bad tie between buyeo and yangjeong.the queen agrees and warns him to be cautious. daeso tells her to keep his journey a secret from everyone else and he then leaves immediately for hyeonto city.the king summons jumong to his room and the king tells jumong how proud he is, since even though one can make a contribution anytime, it is hard for one to change, and the king is very happy to see jumong return as a changed man. jumong replies he has lots to improve on still. king geumwa then hands jumong an important message to deliver to yangjeong at hyeonto city, and names jumong his teuk-sa-ja (special general). jumong says such important business should be given to someone like daeso instead, but the king calls his head general in and tells him to accompany jumong to hyeonto.the queen and her clan find out about how the king's sending jumong on a mission as special general, and the queen is upset saying how the king always favored jumong and she's gotta see the king, but her brother calms her down saying she must be patient. budeukbul and the queen's brother meet with the other advisors and express how displeased they are at the king's selection of jumong but the other advisors say it's a rightful decision based on jumong's contribution.

next budeukbul goes to see the king and when the king mentions how yeomieul was absent from the festival, budeukbul pleads the king to look favorly towards yeomieul since she has been working hard for buyeo. budeukbul sees yeomieul and tells her it seems jumong has the upper hand in the crown prince competition, but yeomieul tells budeukbul jumong broke the damul arrow, and he must be haemosu's blood.meanwhile soseono thinks about daeso's promise to make her queen when he becomes king, and at this thought soseono sighs.jumong gets ready to go on the mission as the king's special messenger, and the king hands jumong the king's golden sword as a token of power. jumong accepts it and leaves for hyeonto city. as he passes through the palace gate, he exchanges looks and smiles with soseono who is watching him from the crowd. sayong who is next to soseono also bows to the prince as he passes by.next, dochi's inferior meets with baemang and asks how he can let jumong live. baemang says it was more profitable to keep jumong alive than to kill him, and he was right for he will be making big money from now on. dochi's inferior is stunned without word. just then buyoung brings dochi's favorite pig intestine (or something disgusting i don't know it's bloody), but dochi says he has no appetite. dochi asks how he can meet yeomieul so he can make a wish cuz things aren't going well for him these days, but buyoung says yeomieul does not pray for personal requests. after buyoung leaves dochi's righthand man arrives and tells dochi he has a way to get prince youngpo's trust back.

in hyeonto city, daeso arrives and yangjeong asks him why he didn't tell him about the existence of a salt mountain in gosan nation, and if he did he would've blocked jumong from reaching there.daeso replies no one else knew about it. afterwards daeso drinks with his servant naro and tells him the farther he goes the lonelier it becomes.. naro replies it is because of the buyeo throne in the big picture. daeso says he will return the pain he's felt to those who've made him this low. jumong arrives in yangjeong's court and yangjeong wonders why he's here. daeso arrives outside the court and asks the guard if it's true that jumong came as a special general. the guard confirms it and daeso is upset.inside yangjeong's court, yangjeong reads the message from geumwa which states buyeo will no longer be subject to han's demands. yangjeong comments buyeo is ungrateful since without han buyeo would have be anything. jumong replies han has not been supporting buyeo, instead it has been threatening buyeo with its unending conditions and thus buyeo has been living in hell under the threats of han. jumong further states if han should threaten buyeo more buyeo will be the first to send army toward han. yangjeong is angered beyond belief and jumong leaves. outside the court jumong runs into daeso who says he has something to say to him. jumong asks daeso why he's here and daeso replies that's none of his business. daeso then asks jumong what exactly did he say to yangjeong, and jumong replies that is not for daeso to know, since he is here not as a prince, but as a special general of the king. daeso is shocked by this and jumong states he must know why daeso is here first. daeso yells at him and asks if he really thinks he's gonna be the crown prince by the small contribution he made. daeso says to mark his words that this is not the end, and leaves.

back in buyeo, ohyi gets a bad news and runs to wake up mari and hyeopbo, to tell them that dochi has sold buyoung as a slave to the han nation. the trio arrive at dochi's and demand to see dochi, but dochi's servant tells them the master will not see them, and it's too late since buyoung has already been sold and had she been prettier they would've gotten a better price.dochi's man goes inside and tells dochi the fish has taken bait and in no time they will catch their fish. mari and hyeopbo state the only thing they can do is to wait for jumong to return, but ohyi says it can't wait and goes to see yeontabal. ohyi asks yeontabal to lend him money, and gyepil scolds him for asking the merchant master for money. yeontabal asks how much, and ohyi says 10 thousand nyang. yeontabal laughs and asks what he will do with that money. ohyi replies he cannot answer it and yeontabal says he is funny to ask for that much money without telling a reason. ohyi says he will give him his life and yeontabal asks how much his life is worth, then comments at this point even if he sold himself he is not worth the 10 thousand nyang and he should return when he is worth that amount. soseono watches as ohyi gets rejected. next, ohyi gets drunk and runs to dochi's insisting on seeing dochi. then ohyi kneels before dochi and begs dochi not to sell buyoung. dochi says it's already done, and ohyi promises to do everything he wants as long as he doesn't sell buyoung. dochi asks if he is really prepared to do anything he wants and ohyi replies yes.youngpo brings dochi and ohyi to daeso at night. daeso asks if ohyi is jumong's man, and asks ohyi if he knows what jumong is up to. at dochi's urging, ohyi reveals to daeso that jumong believes the way to win the crown title is to find the secret formula for curing sword and jumong is currently working with mopalmo to figure out the formula.

JUMONG EPISODE 18 SUMMARY

Ep. 18
soseono sits across from baemang and tells him her group is on their way to gosan nation far away and poverty stricken, then asks baemang if he wonders why on earth a merchant group would go there.baemang is speechless and soseono then asks baemang if he will do business with her.meanwhile back in the prison, mari asks jumong why soseono is here and jumong replies she is here to make a deal with baemang, hyepbo and ohyi wonder how she is going to make a deal with someone who intends to kill them all, and mari angrily wonders why they've put their lives in ssn's hands, but hyepbo says for ssn to come here on her own foot she must have something planned.
back in buyeo, the thuglord dochi heads to the palace and tells prince youngpo that jumong has been caught by his business associate in haengin nation and jumong is about to be killed. youngpo asks who else knows and when dochi says no one else yp orders dc not to tell that to anyone else. yp goes to see his mother and prince daeso, and tells them jumong is dead. yp tells them his inferior told him the good news just now. daeso asks what about the rest of the ppl who went with jumong and yp says he doesn't know yet.ds tells yp not to say something that they haven't confirmed with their own eyes. yp pleads to be believed but ds says he should think about how many foolish things he's done in the past. ds leaves and the queen tells yp his brother merely wants him to be more serious in the future and orders yp not to tell the king about the news of jumong.
meanwhile buyoung goes to see lady yoohwa, who apologizes to buyoung for not looking after her before. BY cries and calls out to YH. YH says BY must be suffering because of JM, and BY says JM has been caught and his life is at risk. daeso tells his servant naro he's headed to yeontabal's camp and tells naro to prepare for it. yoohwa is pacing nervously back and forth in her room, and her maid mudeok suggests she goes to see yeontabal at once. daeso arrives at yeontabal's and asks him if he knows if seosono et al. are in danger and yeontabal smilingly answers a merchant must go through danger in order to be successful and soseono is a strong woman born at the brink of danger and thus she will turn out fine. daeso is still worried but decides to listen to yeontabal and leaves, saying he will come back in the future to discuss the matter of okjeo more. just as yeontabal escorts daeso out, lady yoohwa arrives and daeso asks why she's here. yoohwa thanks yeontabal for looking after jumong. daeso and yoohwa exchange looks and yoohwa goes inside with yeontabal after daeso leaves. yoohwa asks yeontabal for jumong's news and yeontabal says daeso told him soseono and the rest are in danger but the group is doing fine so she shouldn't worry. yoohwa replies he appears to not know that the group is indeed in grave danger. yeontabal sends wootae to find more info at once and wootae and a group of men rush to haengin nation.
at baemang's camp in haein nation, jumong and the trio are told to leave the prison. they are escorted out and jumong glances at soseono who is smilingly slightly. when they get out baemang orders his men to undo their ropes and baemang begs for forgiveness for his bad treatment of the prince, after saluting jumong.next, gyepil expresses his elation at soseono's doing, and sayong compliments soseono as well saying she's even greater than her father. soseono remarks it's a rare compliment from sayong and even if he's just joking she is still happy to hear it. jumong and the trio are drinking in celebration at the eatery and mari wonders if ssn is interested in jumong. hyepbo agrees what she did was more than a boss should do but more like something one would do for the one they like. jumong tells them to drink up instead but wonders about his relationship with soseono queitly...meanwhile ssn is in her room and smiles as she remembers the words she exchanged with jumong about putting each other in the other's hands. next day, as ssn's group heads out to continue their journey, baemang and his men arrive and ssn tells her men not to worry since baemang and his men are here to escort them all the way to gosan nation.
back in buyeo, salt is heavily rationed by the order of the king since han nation has stopped their export of salt to them. yeontabal watches as two men fight over a bag of salt leaving a child crying in the middle of it.king geumwa's advisors and generals report to the king about the severity of salt shortage in buyeo. the queen's brother tells the king at this rate the citizens of buyeo will be fleeing from buyeo and budeukbul angrily tells him to stop the nonsense but the queen's brother says budeukbul didn't see how bad the situation outside the palace has become.wootae returns to tell yeontabal that both soseono and jumong are doing fine and on their way to gosan as planned. yentabal visits the king and offers to give 2000 units of salt which he has in his warehouse. the king asks what will happen then and yeontabal says what happens next is a business transaction between them. ytb says he wishes to build his own weapon factory, thus he hopes the king will lend him mopalmo to help him build his private factory. the king agrees and yeontabal leaves his court, and yeontabal runs into yoohwa outside and he reports to the lady not to worry about jumong since they're on their way to gosan nation. yoohwa thanks yeontabal for the good news.
meanwhile the sachuldo fairies ask yeomieul to find a way to stop the unrest among buyeo's citizens. yeomieul offers no solution and the fairies are worried. next the queen summons 2 of the sachuldo fairies and asks if they can stop the unrest but they answer even yeomieul who's always had a solution in dire situations cannot ease the situation. the queen suggests to mawoori fairy to be the king's fairy since what buyeo needs is not someone like yeomieul but someone like mawoori. the queen's words sparks a greed in mawoori but she says that's too much but the queen insists daeso also wants the same and if he can be the crown prince and future king mawoori will surely be the next lead fairy.yeomieul visits yoohwa and tells her about how she loved king geumwa before she became a fairy and how she continues to put him above all else and the love she wished he would reciprocate is what he gives to yoohwa instead, and yme says even though she knows after what happened to haemosu, yoohwa is probably scarred deeply but she must believe that yme has the king and buyeo's best interest in heart, and what she did to haemosu was following what the heaven's wanted. yme continues and tells yoohwa the king is on the wrong path and yoohwa is the only one who can help him, but yoohwa says perhaps the wrong path is noneother than yeomieul and if yeomieul is here to ask yoohwa to persuade the king to accept han nation's requests then she is wrong. yoohwa says haemosu wanted to fight against the han and she will help the king and jumong carry that out. yeomieul is in tears hearing that yoohwa is determined not to help her.
yoohwa visits the king and tells the king she understands how lonely he must be these days and she's sorry she couldn't help him. king says she knows buyeo is in dire state but he will not succomb to yangjeong's conditions. yoohwa tells the king she will stand behind his decision. the king thanks yoohwa addressing her as his wife.jumong and the trio go around gosan nation asking the scattered poor citizens if they know where the salt mountain is. but just as they mention the word salt the citizens run away and the trio comment something must be up, and how gosan doesn't even seem like a nation with no real village even. but an old gosan man watches from distance what the newcomers are doing. at night soseon's group is gathered and wonder if such thing as a salt mountain really exist in gosan nation. jumong assures them it must exist, and soseono comments they must look for it themselves. next morning ssn's group and baemang's men search all over gosan nation for the legendary salt mountain. they find nothing after a day of search and mari thinks jumong may have been lied to.baemang demands to see soseono, asking if she's lied to him. baemang says he tried to believe them but he can't stand it anymore since the salt mountain just isn't there. jumong tries to calm him saying they just need to find it. baemang continues saying they can't find something that doesn't exist. just then the old man appears and tells them the salt mountain does exist. the old man reveals that the gosan nation's fairy closed it down a few decades ago saying it is cursed. ssn asks the old man if he can take them there and he replies yes. sayong asks him what he wants from them and the old man says nothing. the man says he's lived long enough and before he dies he wants to show the gosan ppl that they have hope too. next ssn and baemang's ppl are led to the salt mountain by the old gosan man.

when they get closer the trio inspect the mountain and sees that the mountain is watched by gosan's army.sayong advises them not to harm the army men and ssn agrees saying they should wait til night time to make their move. when night falls jumong, ssn, and the rest are led to the cave by the gosan man. before they enter, the man says he will go in first. as they wait the man returns holding a block of salt. mari licks and says it's salty, then jumong tries it too and tells ssn it is indeed salt. just then the gosan man is shot by arrow and a group of army men appear pointing swords and arrows at ssn's group. next jumong, ssn, and the trio are in the prison. when asked by the prisonward who is the one in charge, ssn stands up saying it is she, and jumong stands up saying it was his idea to go to gosan.but ssn stops jumong saying she is the merchant in charge and goes out with the gosan general. ssn is led to gosan's fairywoman who asks where ssn came from. ssn answers she is a merchant from yentabals's camp. the fairy chu-yu-seong asks why she's here and ssn says to look for salt for buyeo. ssn says the ppl are suffering and asks the fairy if she will do business with her. the fairy says the rightful owner of salt mountain is acutally habaek group who has helped gosan. ssn says habaek is already destroyed by the han and the fairy says she knows and she is waiting to hand the mountain to habaek's survivor. next ssn brings jumong before the fairy and introduces him as prince jumong, decedant of habaek (through yoohwa). the fairy bows and kneels before jumong.back at the palace king geumwa tells his subjects buyeo will not heed to yangjeong's request and buyeo will send army to fight okjeo for salt. geumwa tells his lead general to get an army ready, and states he will lead the army himself. daeso tells the king he will lead the army inplace of the king and asks for permission.the news gets to yangjeong who is angry at geumwa, and yangjeong reveals he never needed geumwa's soldiers for he was merely trying to test geumwa, but now that geumwa has gone against him, yangjeong will lead an army to okjeo too. before they leave, king geumwa tells his subjects to prepare themselves for death in the war against okjeo. just then jumong arrives and stops them from going. the king asks who ssn is and jumong introduces her as yeontabal's daughter. daeso asks youngpo what's going on and youngpo is at loss for words. jumong then tells the king buyeo will no longer have to be at han's mercy for salt, since they have found a salt mountain in gosan for buyeo's dispense.

Yang Jeong says that he has nothing to say to the two and that the only way to resolve the issue is for King Geum Wa to come to him and receive the order of Han’s Emperor…

To this, Bu Deuk Bul suggests to Dae Soh that they should return to Buyeo and seek other options rather than endure such insult, but Dae Soh is determined to resolve the case before returning. Meanwhile, Yeo Mi Eul visits Geum Wa after much deliberation and expresses her resentment at Geum Wa’s sole decision on how to install the Crown Prince. Yeon Ta Bal has been watching Ju Mong practicing with his bow and says he has never seen a better archer than Ju Mong in his whole life.
Remembering Hae Mo Soo who once saved him from trouble with his superb martial arts skills, Yeon Ta Bal is quite surprised to find out Ju Mong was trained by none other than Hae Mo Soo himself.Meanwhile, So Seo Noh, upon hearing the news that Dae Soh has returned after settling the conflict with the Han Empire, visits him in his quarters. Delighted by her visit, Dae Soh brings out a wooden box on to the table. Precious stones are inside the box.

After thinking for a moment, Yu Hwa takes off the jade ring that she wore around her neck and hands it to Ju Mong, telling him to give it to the woman he loves. Yeo Mi Eul sits at the same table with So Ryeong, the youngest priestess in Bu Yeo, who says that she’s been pressed under a mysterious power ever since she entered the Palace and Yeo Mi Eul remembers how Byeo Ri Ha fainted in front of Ju Mong.

Epi. 17
Ju Mong and So Seo No fight off masked men who raided the group. So Seo Noh gets mixed feelings after discovering that one of the fallen men was a military official whom she often encountered while trading weapons with the nation of Haeng In. While Hyeop Bo and Ma Ri insist on continuing the journey, Ju Mong says he will follow So Seo No’s decision since she is the leader. Geum Wa is troubled by the Han Empire’s request to dispatch Bu Yeo’s 10,000 soldiers for its battle against the southwestern barbarians.
To prevent his achievement from being wasted in vain, Dae Soh proposes negotiations to Yang Jeong, saying that Bu Yeo will send its troops conditionally, but Geum Wa decides to prepare a war with the Han Empire. So Seo Noh is determined to abort the journey but decides to wait on account of Ju Mong who asks her to give him two days of time. To carry on the journey, Ju Mong sneaks into the mountain hold of the bandits, but ends up getting caught, and So Seo Noh enters the hold to make a deal with the bandit leader

King Geum Wa calls Ju Mong to his quarters. He asks Ju Mong for the identity of the assassin who tried to kill Ju Mong, but Ju Mong answers he doesn’t know…A moment later, Geum Wa inquires Ju Mong about his exceptional martial arts skills, and Ju Mong answers that he acquired them from a teacher named Hae Mo Soo while he was living outside the Palace. Meanwhile, King Geum Wa calls up all the statesmen, Won Hu, Yu Hwa, Ju Mong, Dae Soh and Young Po to his quarters, and drops a bomb that he convened the meeting because he wanted to discuss what they should do about proclaiming the Crown Prince.

GOONG CHARACTER ANALYSIS

Goong is adapted from the same titled manga by Park So Hee. Read the manhwa here

It's a different Korea, where a royal family rules and a beautiful palace sits in the heart of modern-day Seoul. It's where a normal girl and a celebrated prince will discover their fate, tying them together for as long as their love-hate relationship will allow. Chae Gyung, art student one day, crown princess the next, must find a way to survive the extravagance of palace life while falling faster and faster in love with her husband, the lonely and reluctant prince. Once upon a time, there was far from enough warmth between them to build the fairy tale relationship, but in this modern Cinderella story, scandals, love triangles, and royal jealousy can all fit in the shoe.

Shin Chae Gyung (Yoon Eun Hye)
- A heroine with a heart of gold, Chae Gyung is compassionate, free-spirited, and fiercely loyal to her loved ones. She's won the genetic lottery as a result of her grandfather's agreement with the late emperor and is promised from the cradle to the crown prince of Korea. Nineteen years later, she grudgingly accepts marriage to a handsome but outwardly unemotional Prince Shin. Despite her clumsy, silly ways, she brings a cheerful, genuine presence to the doll-like stoniness of the palace and slowly gains the acceptance of the royal family. In the beginning, the animosity between herself and Shin is mutual, however, as the estranged distance between them closes with understanding, Chae Gyung learns that true love is the only thing this prince charming needs to make her the queen of his heart.

Lee Shin (Joo Ji Hoon)
- He's no Romeo or Casanova, but he's won the heart of every girl in Korea as their crown prince. Brought up with every adherence to proper manners and royal duties, he's suddenly found himself married to a spunky, "common" girl who isn't afraid to treat him like a normal human being. Though inwardly touched by Chae Gyung's open adoration of him, he isn't the type to express how he feels through words. Throughout the course of their marriage, he faces ex-girlfriend troubles and repeated royal scandals, all topped with his impending vow of giving up the throne for his freedom. In time, he learns he's truly come to love his Cinderella and has to find the courage to tell her before his pride drives them apart forever.

Lee Yul (Kim Jung Hoon)
- The fallen angel and palace outcast, Yul is sentimental, reserved, and possesses a first-rate lady killer smile. The quiet type, he prefers books and nostalgic childhood places to the party scene. First cousin to Shin and originally first in line to the throne, Yul was just five when his father died unexpectedly, leaving the crown title to Shin's father. Following imperial law, Yul and his mother left the palace to live a solitary but not unpleasant life in London. Fourteen years later, his return to Korea is driven by a shadowed desire to reclaim his throne. In the royal chaos that ensues, he also finds himself falling for Chae Gyung, unable to let go of the fact that she was first betrothed to him. Over time, as his feelings grow, he must choose between his dream of becoming king and his love for a woman he can never have.

Min Hyorin (Song Ji Hyo)
- A premier ballet dancer, Hyorin fulfills every stereotypical characteristic of the high school Queen Bee: pretty, rich, and incredibly immune to human emotions. At least on the surface it seems that way. For two years, she's carried on a relationship with Shin, both of them keeping it secret to avoid mass media and social attention. Prior to his wedding, Shin proposed to Hyorin to escape his arranged marriage, but she declined, not willing to give up her dancing dreams. She feels the full sting of her rejection only after Shin marries Chae Gyung and resolves herself to win him back. In addition to the love triangle she creates, she also has a hidden past that threatens her confidence and desire to live. Beneath the haughty exterior, she's insecure, lonely, and increasingly hopeless as she watches Shin move on without her. Her only remaining wall of support is Kang In, who may or may not be able to convince her that his love for her is enough.
